King’s Mill Hospital is undergoing a radical transformation to create World-class facilities.

Costing over £320m, the rebuild of King’s Mill Hospital and parts of Mansfield Community Hospital is the biggest ever investment in the local NHS and is one of the Government’s major hospital re-building schemes in the country.

April 2010 sees the opening of the two new main towers, and marks the latest and largest phase of the project to date.

Representing the very latest in design and technology, these towers contain 17 new wards with 406 beds, Day Case Unit, Endoscopy, CCU and MAU Departments.

Digitech were the successful bidder for the supply, installation and warranty of a structured cabling systems throughout the high tech tower units and an ADC Krone TrueNet Category 6 system was chosen as the default solution.

Providing infrastructure services to some 406 beds together with wireless technology and patient monitoring systems, Digitech worked extensively with both the Trust and the primary builder Skanska to design the cabling infrastructure, wire ways, tray systems and communications rooms.

The horizontal copper cabling infrastructure consists of 3460 ADC Krone Truenet® Category 6 Low smoke zero halogen user connections. A mix of both multimode and single mode fibre was the chosen backbone solution and due to the very tight working space and containment restricted space throughout ward areas, Corning® ClearCurve® multimode fiber was the preferred backbone choice as it offered greater flexibility & can withstand tight bends and challenging cabling routes with significantly less signal loss than traditional multimode fibers

In total 10 communication room service the two tower units and 16 floors, each communications room was dual linked with diversely radiating 24 core fibre systems of both single and multimode conformance, thereby providing maximum fault tolerance and redundancy.
